Communities In Schools of Putnam County is the lead agency in Putnam County for the Governor's Mentoring Initiative.
The Governor's Mentoring Initiative is an effort to recruit 200,000 Floridians to become mentors.
Building off the wonderful volunteer efforts begun by General Colin Powell with America's Promise and in coordination with state agencies, businesses, nonprofit associations, and Florida schools, this initiative is designed to help students excel in school.
Right now, there are thousands of children in Florida waiting to be matched up with a mentor. These kids are already in danger of failing or dropping out of school. The sad truth is that there are not nearly enough mentors.
Statistics show that a young person who meets with a mentor is:
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin drinking alcohol
52% less likely to skip school
33% less likely to engage in a fight
Governor Jeb Bush initiated this program based on his own experience as a mentor.
